Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a surgery performed on the fleshy tissue that hangs from the soft palate above the root of the tongue. The goal of the surgery is to remove tissue and remodel the uvula to improve the flow of air into the lungs and reduce snoring.
The tissues involved may include the uvula, tonsils, the soft palate and the pharynx. The procedure also stiffens the tissue, making it less likely to vibrate and cause snoring. UPPP is sometimes considered Phase I of the Stanford Protocol which features an adjustment of the jaw using a procedure called Maxillomandibular Advancement.
